A Day of Nature, Culture, and Creativity: MCU Students Explore Yilan’s Toucheng Farm
By Lisa Nguyen
On November 9, students from Ming Chuan University’s Taipei and Taoyuan campuses enjoyed a delightful one-day trip to Toucheng Farm in Yilan, filled with laughter, learning, and cultural exchange.

The journey began early in the morning as students gathered at Jiantan MRT Station. From there, six buses—three from the Taipei Campus and three from the Taoyuan Campus—departed for Yilan. After around two hours of traveling through scenic mountain roads and tunnels, the group arrived at the peaceful, green Toucheng Farm.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the farm staff and treated to traditional Taiwanese desserts and noodles. The delicious local flavors helped everyone recharge after the long ride. Following the meal, students had some free time to stroll around the farm and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere surrounded by lush greenery and fresh air.

The first major activity took place at the main house and included a homemade fruit vinegar workshop and a tote bag design activity. Guided by instructors, students learned how to make orange vinegar, carefully mixing ingredients, bottling their creations, and bringing them home as souvenirs. The second creative session allowed everyone to design their own tote bags using natural leaves and colorful paints—an artistic and relaxing hands-on experience that sparked creativity.

After these engaging workshops, everyone gathered at the farm’s restaurant for a buffet lunch featuring a wide variety of traditional local dishes. The international students especially enjoyed tasting the local cuisine, which offered unique flavors and cultural experiences. During lunch, the atmosphere became even livelier as a saxophonist performed soothing jazz music, adding a special touch to the meal.

In the afternoon, the group embarked on a guided tour of Toucheng Farm. The local guides enthusiastically introduced students to the farm’s ecological system, which includes buffaloes, ducks, goats, insects, and a wide range of plants. They explained how the farm preserves biodiversity and promotes sustainable agriculture. The students were fascinated by how the farm balances environmental protection with tourism, and many took photos to capture the memorable moments.

The trip to Toucheng Farm was not just a getaway from the city but also an educational experience that connected students with nature, culture, and one another. It reminded everyone of the importance of sustainability and the simple happiness that comes from learning and exploring together.
