Students Gain Practical Insights at “Resume Ready” Workshop

By Nabi Bui

The British Council, in collaboration with Ming Chuan University’s EMI Resource Center, jointly organized the “Resume Ready” Workshop on March 17. The session was conducted by Dr. Scott Sommers, who shared practical knowledge and real-world perspectives on preparing effective resumes for today’s job market.

Throughout the workshop, the speaker highlighted several common mistakes that often reduce the impact of job applications. These included using overly general objective statements, failing to demonstrate achievements with measurable results, including outdated or irrelevant experiences, and overlooking small but important details such as grammar and formatting. Students were encouraged to tailor their resumes to each position and focus on presenting clear, concise, and relevant information.

In addition to content, the session also touched on resume design and structure. A clean and professional layout, consistent formatting, and readability were emphasized as key elements that help candidates make a strong first impression on employers.

An engaging part of the workshop was the discussion on recruitment practices in Taiwan. Students raised questions about whether paper resumes are still commonly used. The speaker explained that while most companies now prefer digital applications, printed resumes can still be required in certain situations, such as job fairs or face-to-face interviews. In these cases, a well-organized and neatly presented paper resume remains important.

The workshop concluded with an interactive feedback session, where many students brought their own CVs to receive direct comments from Dr. Sommers. This provided valuable, personalized guidance and allowed participants to better understand how to improve their resumes based on real examples.

Overall, the workshop offered students meaningful insights and practical experience, helping them build stronger applications and better prepare for future career opportunities.
