In order to lighten the teaching workload of newly employed assistant professors, encourage full-time faculty members to attain National Science Council (NSC) grants, and assist full-time assistant professors or instructors to increase their research quality and quantity and to highlight the university’s research outcomes, three regulations – MCU Course Reduction Hours Procedures for Newly Employed Assistant Professors, MCU Procedures regarding Stimulus Awards for National Science Council Grant Proposals, and Procedures for Ming Chuan University Research Guidance – proposed by the Research and Development Division (R&D Division) were passed at the Administrative Council Meeting on July 15, 2010. These regulations are implemented from this academic year, providing not only research awards but also outlining responsibilities and duties. Interested individuals may submit their applications to the R&D Division before the end of October every year. In accordance with MCU Course Reduction Hours Procedures for Newly Employed Assistant Professors, individuals who obtained their doctorate degree either domestically or abroad within the past three years and are employed for the first time by the University as full-time assistant professors may apply for reduction of two to three teaching hours each semester. During the period that assistant professors enjoy course reduction, they cannot receive extra hours payment or take part-time contracts at other institutions. During the period of course reduction, the assistant professors should apply annually for NSC Grant Proposals. Also, within one year of the application, the faculty member should submit a paper to an SCI, SSCI, A&HCI, EI, TSSCI or an equivalent academic journal and provide relevant documents to the R&D Division for reference. During and after the period of course reduction, these assistant professors cannot resign from their position for at least two years. Violators should compensate the University at the rate of two times the hourly teaching pay in accordance with the number of reduced course hours. Through MCU Procedures regarding Stimulus Awards for National Science Council Grant Proposals, full-time faculty members who receive three or more points for NSC Grants over four consecutive years will be rewarded with 4,000 NTD every month; faculty with eight or more points over the ten consecutive years will receive 8,000 NTD every month. For individuals who have received NSC Grants but do not meet the abovementioned two criteria, the University will award a one-time bonus of 6,000 NTD for every grant. According to this stimulus awards regulation, a total of 113 individuals will be rewarded beginning this academic year: 11 faculty members who have eight or more points for NSC Grants over the last ten years are to receive 8,000 NTD every month; 49 faculty members who have three or more points for NSC Grants over the last four years receive 4,000 NTD every month; and 53 individuals who have received 2010 NSC Grants were rewarded with a one-time bonus of 6,000 NTD. Procedures for Ming Chuan University Research Guidance refers to applying faculty members finding a partner to be an advisor for research guidance and assistance. The advisor may be issued one fourth of the research award for any paper published in SCI, SSCI, A&HCI, EI, or TSSCI in accordance with Article 7, Clause 1-4 MCU Research / Study Reward Application Procedures for Full-time Faculty Members. Amounts of less than 10,000 NTD will be issued as 10,000 NTD. Any paper published in an equivalent academic journal by the advisor and the assistance-requesting faculty member will be rewarded with 8,000 NTD. The assistance-requesting faculty member should be the principle investigator and the advisor should be the co-investigator for the NSC grant proposal submitted by them.
