【770-3】巴祐寧大馬服務心得(英文版)

國企學程二/ 巴祐寧Joagni (布吉納法索籍) The 2010 service learning in Malaysia is frankly one of the most enjoyable social activities I have ever participated in since my arrival upon Taiwan. Combining entertainment with didacticism, the activities were adjusted to the level of the students. Activities for Grade 1 and grade 2 students focused on discipline, attentiveness and alertness, making them explore and value their own unique personality traits. In so doing, we aimed at convincing them that while being inspired by others is not bad per se, they should rely on their own potential and hidden genius instead of engaging in a desperate, stressful and unhealthy imitation of others. We encouraged 3rd grade and 4th grade students to cultivate respect, cooperation and team spirit. We also required them to accomplish certain tasks without using their eyes or hands: we expected them to experience the difficult life of handicapped people, and thereby develop a sense of compassion and respect towards the disabled. With 5th grade and 6th grade students, we focused on the role of communication as the best means of dispute and misunderstanding settlement not only between academic peers, but also with teachers, parents and foreigners. As for the junior high school students, we helped them prospect for their career interests, explore their inner selves, identify and define their personal greatest dreams, and envisage ways to realize them. We also called students and parents attention to the need for protecting the environment by reducing and converting waste into reusable materials. All those activities were conducted in a jovial atmosphere, which kept everyone excited and happy from the beginning till the end. The Feedback that we got from the students at the end of the activities are very satisfactory and prove how they enjoyed the service. This service learning gave me an insight into the Malaysian culture, greatly satisfied my intellectual curiosity and did in many ways reinforce my belief that helping others is another way of serving and improving oneself. Being keen on foreign languages, this service learning was a golden opportunity for me to practice and improve my Chinese because we were speaking in Chinese most of the time. All my Taiwanese associates were always willing to teach me new Chinese idioms and other useful expressions that greatly revived my Chinese skill. Let my heartfelt gratitude be extended, through this reflection paper, to all those nice teachers and associates who displayed an unwavering sense of supportiveness all this service long. Our team was a composite of Taiwanese, African, Caribbean and Malaysian students. However, the discussion times that punctuated our activities helped us overcome the paralyzing side of our cultural and educational differences, be understanding, cooperate and develop the strong sense of team spirit that led to the success of our project. As someone who is prospecting for a business career, I believe this ability to be flexible and work successfully with different people is a very important aspect of this service learning; and I look forward to similar activities in the future.
