Running, it’s worth it.

(Francisco Javier Leon Aguilar)

I was really happy to finish first at the Big 7k Run. Representing Ming Chuan University gave me great satisfaction. It was thrilling to be part of the atmosphere and be among lots of students running with enthusiasm. I am currently into my first year working towards my bachelor’s degree in International Business and Trade. So far it’s been a great experience to be part of the Ming Chuan community and the track and field team with my coach 劉淑華. I couldn’t have made it to Taiwan without the ICDF Scholarship and my family and friends’ support. My grandfather, Francisco, introduced me to running long distance races (5k to 21k) and, later on, short distances (400m).

Running alongside him has been wonderful; he is a great training partner and role model. I really got into competing internationally at the beginning of last year, that’s when I really started to take it seriously. Before running I did soccer, swimming and karate. At the moment, I am recovering from an injury, but I will get back to the track because the season is not over yet. I’ll start training again this month to compete in the Taiwan National Intercollegiate Athletics Games and back in my country at the Guatemalan National Championships. Universiade Taipei 2017 is my long term goal; it is an international multisport event organized for the university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Running has helped me to be disciplined in life. I have endured pain, learned to become perseverant and get to know myself better; more than a sport, it is a lifestyle. Running consists of challenging yourself both mentally and physically. In addition, it is a healthy environment where you can meet other athletes, learn from each other and share. I want to inspire as many people as possible to get into it. There are so many events you can participate in. You just need to find the right one and you’ll end up loving it. This is a sport of many ups and downs, lots of hard work and sacrifices, but in the end, it’s worth it.
